Little Paintings in time for the Holidays

It has been quite a pleasure to paint for this year's Big 500 show. These aren't the best photos of all of my little 8x8" pieces but you get the gist, and if you like one: get there early to snag it for only $40 in this benefit for Oregon Food Bank:

Snuggling with Mum, Quin Sweetman
All work created from life -- not photos -- in the Impressionist/Alla Prima tradition. I enjoyed setting up still-lifes of flowers, painting live models (and one landscape) and then pushing past what was in front of me to emphasize the colors, designs and patterns which appealed to me. I feel like these are my best works yet because I had so much fun creating them. This show of affordable art by over 500 artists benefits the Oregon Food Bank, so bring a can of food. (Also, next-door, the new OneDer Gallery features art of all sizes for $100-and-under.) Get there early:

Plein Air Season Wrap

I guess it's been a while ...

Lots happening but here's one of the recent highlights. I participated in the Plein Air Washington County event and won Third Place, overall. With over one hundred great paintings to choose from, I was quite honored (floored actually) that my painting was chosen. I'll post close ups of the completed paintings, soon. Thank you to the organizers at Sequoia Gallery and Juror, Za Vue.

Artivism: My Artful Activism

Quin Sweetman, "Artful Activism, St. Johns Bridge", Oil on Canvas, 16x20"
Here's the painting I made during the protest. It was made on site, otherwise known as "Plein Air Painting" and hence, has an "unfinished" impressionist quality, which I think adds to the feeling of action. Several people have expressed interest in bidding on this work to benefit efforts to fight drilling in the arctic. I will post an auction site soon, but for now, please send me your contact information if you would like to be notified of the auction or purchase a print of my painting. Many thanks! Quin Sweetman, Artivist

Update: Plein Air Today covered my painting and wrote a nice piece about Artful Activism http://www.outdoorpainter.com/parting-shot-activism-art-artivism/

Painter on the Scene as Greenpeace protesters hang off St. Johns Bridge to block ship's passage - KPTV - FOX 12

Well, I decided if those protesters were going to "decorate" our bridge so beautifully, I could show up and paint it, at least.  Somehow it led the 11 o'clock news. My mom would have loved it! See the news real on this link:

I'd like to help with this effort so let me know if you're interesting in purchasing this painting or a print to benefit Greenpeace's efforts to stop drilling in the Arctic.

A Mother's Gift

I'm featured in a lovely eZine, 2nd Tuesday, by Fred Swan this month at http://fredrickswan.com/a-mothers-gift/

The past year-and-a-half has been quite difficult, as I was losing my mom to liver failure, but this Zine focuses on the positive: The gifts my mother gave me. Please take a quick look and let us know what you think.

Peace and happy gardening, my friends,

Quin

Painting for a Good Cause

My painting was juried into the Cascade AIDS Project Art Auction: pARTy

Quiet Contrapposto, Oil on Canvas, 20x24", Quin Sweetman, $1200
I'm happy that this painting will be sold to benefit a good cause. Cascade Aids Project helps in the fight against HIV/AIDS and also provides important services to people living with the virus. "We depend on the Art Auction not only to fund our work, but to build community in the fight against HIV and to keep awareness of the epidemic alive. This awareness is key to conquering the virus." Last year, 1,500 people attended the Art Auction. We always enjoy this gala affair immensely. Find out more and get tickets at: http://www.capartauction.org

Long time, no blog ...

Local Color, St. Johns, Oil on Panel, Quin Sweetman

Here's a painting of my favorite bridge, in honor of St. Patrick's Day. I am showing this and five other  paintings at the Northeast Community Center this month, along with fellow Alla Prima Portland artist, Celeste Bergin. I'm always thrilled to show with Celeste as she is both very talented and a delightful person. Her beau, Dave Burbach is a wonderful photographer and very kind to document the hanging of our show and the ensuing shenanigans:
